Get the Smartest Card @ Your Library

Porterville, CA, 8/24/10 — September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Porterville City Library wants to make sure that all children and adults in the community have the smartest card of all – a library card.

Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.  Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning. 

Students can use the library to get one-on-one online homework assistance through Brainfuse’s HelpNow! They can utilize a variety of resources for research including databases with downloadable ebooks and practice exams.  Students can also come in to relax, play games via the Internet, check out books, music or DVDs to help make after school life more enjoyable.  A library card gives you access to all these resources for FREE.

New to our local National Library Card Sign Up Month Celebration is a drawing on Friday, October 1 sponsored by the Friends of the Porterville Library. Prizes include a Laptop Computer, Flip-Camera, and i-pod.  All new library card applications received September 1 – September 30 will be entered to win.
