As Porterville’s students went back to school last month, the Porterville City Library wants to make sure that all children, youth and adults have the “Smartest Card” – a library card. 

          With a library card you can solve a mystery, trek to another planet in a Sci-Fi novel, borrow an audiobook for your next road trip, trace your family tree, prepare your resume, get a book through interlibrary loan, learn about local history, and so much more!

         “Today’s libraries provide all types of students with the tools they need to succeed,” says Yuliana Madrigal Andrade.  “Libraries provide young readers with exciting and engaging programs that make learning fun.  It is for these reasons that now more than ever a library card is the smartest card.”

          Owning a library card provides students with free access to news articles, encyclopedias and test preparation materials, as well as homework help and other resources.  In addition, the Porterville library offers free Internet access for everyone with a card; an important resource for families without access at home.  Throughout the year the library offers reading programs, story hours in English and Spanish, tutoring services, adult literacy programs and more.

          Getting a library card is easy and FREE!  All you need to do is come into the library, fill out an application, and show a valid photo ID, or if you are a minor have your parent or legal guardian come in with you to show their ID.

          Library Card Sign-Up Month is a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

              Mientras los estudiantes de Porterville regresaron a la escuela en el mes pasado, la Biblioteca Pública de Porterville quiere asegurarse de que todos los niños, adolecentes y adultos tienen “La Tarjeta Más Inteligente” – una tarjeta de la biblioteca.

              ¡Con una tarjeta de la biblioteca se puede esclarecer un misterio, caminar hacia otro planeta en una novela de ciencia ficción, tomar prestado un libro grabado para su próximo viaje, trazar su árbol genealógico, preparar su currículum, pedir un libro por préstamo interbibliotecario, aprender sobre la historia local, y mucho más!

              “Las bibliotecas de hoy ofrecen a todo tipo de estudiante las herramientas necesarias para tener éxito,” explica Yuliana Madrigal Andrade.  “Bibliotecas ofrecen programas emocionantes y entretenidos para que el aprendizaje sea más divertido para lectores jóvenes.  Es por estas razones que ahora, más que nunca, una tarjeta de la biblioteca es la tarjeta más inteligente.”

              Tener una tarjeta de la biblioteca les provee a los estudiantes acceso gratis a los artículos de la prensa, enciclopedias, libros con ejemplares de exámenes, ayuda con la tarea y otros recursos.  También, en la Biblioteca de Porterville se ofrece acceso gratis al Internet para todos que tengan una tarjeta; un recurso importante para familias sin acceso en la casa.  Durante el año la biblioteca ofrece programas y concursos de lectura, lectura de cuentos en inglés y español, servicios de tutoría, un programa de alfabetización para adultos y más.

              ¡Conseguir una tarjeta para la biblioteca es fácil y GRATIS!  Nada más se ocupa visitar la biblioteca, llenar una solicitud, y mostrar identificación válida con fotografía, o para menores de edad, el padre, madre o tutor legal tiene que acompañarlo para mostrar su identificación.

              El Mes de Inscripción para Tarjetas de la Biblioteca es cuando la Asociación de Bibliotecas de América y bibliotecas por todo el país les recuerdan a los papás que una tarjeta de la biblioteca es la herramienta escolar más importante.
