Steve Walker

Police Department

Steve Walker started with the Porterville Police Department as a volunteer chaplain in December of 1989.  As a volunteer chaplain Steve would respond to incidents to provide comfort and counseling to crime victims and/or their families.  Steve continues this role today and has also conducted numerous Critical Incident Stress Debriefings for police personnel who responded to these tragic incidents.

In October of 2010 Steve was hired as a full time Community Service Officer to oversee the Police Department's newly created Juvenile Diversion Program.  In this program Steve works with first time juvenile offenders and their families to bring about positive change in the juveniles behavior and attitude to keep them from reoffending.  Since this program’s inception Steve has worked with over 1800 juveniles and has obtained a success rate between 60-70 % where participants do not reoffend.

In 2012, Steve brought the national program Parents on a Mission to Porterville.  This program helps parents be leaders in their family and helps to give parents the tools needed to help lead their children down the path of success and be positive contributors to society.  Since starting this program Steve has helped approximately 200 families in completing the program.

At the Police Department, Steve is also active as a Crime Prevention Officer where he regularly attends community events and provides information on how to avoid being a victim of various crimes.  Steve also serves as the hearing officer for parking tickets.

Recently, Steve has agreed to serve as a volunteer chaplain for the Fire Department where he will be available for call outs to provide assistance to fire victims and their families, and will also serve as a resource for fire personnel who respond to such tragic events.

Throughout all this, Steve has also served at the Valley Oak Community Church.  Starting in 1976 as a Youth Pastor, in 1998 he became the Senior Pastor, the position in which he still serves.

Steve is married to his wife Cheryl and they have been married for 39 years.  Together they have a son Ryan Walker who is married to Joslyn.  Ryan and Joslyn have provided Steve and Cheryl with three granddaughters, Gracie 9 years, Katelyn 7 years, and Aubrey 2 years.
