March 2018 Employee of the Month

Claudia Calderon

Community Development

Claudia Calderon began working for the City in July, 2015 as an Administrative Aide for the Housing Division. In August, 2016, she was promoted to a Development Assistant.

She was raised in Porterville and graduated from Porterville High School. She has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Spanish from Saint Mary’s College of California, as well as a Master’s of Science in non-profit management. Claudia is happily married to her loving and supportive husband, Rodolfo.

Claudia is responsible for monitoring and reporting for the Community Development Block Grant and HOME programs, which include the First Time Home Buyer Program; the Rehabilitation program, Revolving Loan programs, and many more. She is actively involved with the annual Project Homeless Connect, as well as a board member of the Kings/Tulare Continuum of Care and a member of the Tulare County Homeless Task Force.

Claudia often goes above and beyond the call of duty in her job performance. A great example of this would be when temperatures recently plummeted and were anticipated to be below freezing for several nights, a warming center was established and Claudia was contacted on a Friday evening to assist. She created flyers, reached out to her vast network, coordinated transportation and personally distributed the flyers to people experiencing homelessness.

Her compassion is balanced with a strength and determination to establish firm boundaries when dealing with difficult clients, to navigate the complex bureaucracy of funding agencies, and to manage the various demands of the position she holds.

Claudia’s favorite component of her position is being able to help people achieve the American dream of being a homeowner and seeing the fruits of the housing rehabilitation. She states “It is great to see someone’s quality of life improve with the programs that we have.” Her passion for the community and willingness to go the extra mile to help is seen in her work daily and is why she was selected as the Employee of the Month for March 2018.
