September 2019 Employee of the Month

Gary Miller

Police Department

Sergeant Gary Miller joined the Porterville Police Department in June of 1999 and has worked a wide variety of assignments during his 20 year career with the Porterville Police Department.    Those assignments have included; Patrol Officer, K9 Handler, Detective, Field Training Officer, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team member, Range Master/Firearms Instructor, Police Corporal and currently a Police Sergeant.  When asked about his favorite assignments, Sergeant Miller is especially proud and thankful for his opportunity to have served as a Police K9 handler and the Range Master/Firearms Instructor.

Gary was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and has been married to his wife Carla for 26 years. Gary and Carla have raised four children while residing in Porterville. Their daughter Morgan is currently employed as a Sales Representative for Sherwin Williams and attends Harvard University.  She is working towards her Master’s Degree in Biology Research.  Their oldest son James served in and was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps.  He is now attending the University of Massachusetts, majoring in business. Their younger two children, Andrew and Thomas thrive as students at St. Anne’s School in Porterville.

Upon retirement on September 1, 2019, Gary and his family plan on returning to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where they will be reunited with family and friends. He will then again become an expert in eating Cajun cooking.  Gary says he is thankful for the opportunities that were provided to him and his family by the Porterville Police Department and the City of Porterville. However, it is the past and present employees of the Porterville Police Department, and the employees and residents of the City of Porterville, who should be thankful for the long years of dedicated service Gary has provided to this community.  He will be missed and there is no doubt his departure will have an impact to the department.  Gary has played a strong role in ensuring there will be someone ready to take his place.  Congratulations on your retirement Sergeant Miller!
