Lifeguard Certification Course
CPR Training & First Aid for the Professional Rescuer

American Red Cross Training Class includes CPR training for the professional rescuer and community first aid.  All of these are required for the lifeguard positions with various facilities in the community.

Course Prerequisites:

Candidates must be 16 years of age on or before the final session of the class and complete the following prerequisites:

r_284i. Candidates must swim 300 yards continuously, using these  strokes in the following order:

  1. 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick.
  2. 100 yards breastroke.
There is no time frame requirement for this skill.  Prospective participants must show only that they swim 300 yards using the above strokes without stopping.

ii. Candidates must also swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a ten pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the objective of getting both feet out of the water and onto the deck within 140 seconds.

Participants MUST attend ALL dates to be certified (Dates coming soon)

American Red Cross Lifeguard Renewal Class includes CPR training for the professional rescuer, community first aid, prerequisites and basic lifeguard skills.  All of these are required for the lifeguard positions with various facilities in the community. The training is approximately 8 hours.

This is a renewal class for certified lifeguards.  Certified Lifeguards are required to renew their certification every two years.

*No refunds will be given for failure to complete prerequisites.

**Completion of this course does not guarantee employment with the City of Porterville.
