MATTRESS COLLECTION SITE APPROVED FOR PORTERVILLE

At its meeting on March 5, 2024, the Porterville City Council authorized a partnership with the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) to become a mattress collection site to reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills and to discourage illegal dumping. After the closure of the Teapot Dome Landfill, the County of Tulare discontinued receiving mattresses, leaving City residents without a local mattress disposal site.

The MRC operates the Bye Bye Mattress program and assists in fulfilling legal obligations, recycling laws, and registration and reporting requirements to the state. The MRC works closely with local governments and waste management professionals and allows for the reimbursement of up to $2.50 per mattress collected. The MRC also promotes the California Illegally Dumped Mattress Collection Initiative, and allocates funds to run this program. By registering in this program, the City would receive a reimbursement of up to $15.00 for each mattress picked up within City limits.

As part of the service agreement contract with MRC, monthly reporting will be required and an additional staff member will be allocated to the Refuse Department. The additional staff member will be responsible for operating the program and the collection of the items for disposal. This partnership will provide a disposing site for city residents to help prevent illegally dumped mattresses which have become a blight in the community. This service will be provided at no cost for City residents. An announcement will be made once the mattress site is open to the public.
